The Rose Thief

The Rose Thief, ink on paper

I'm currently on leave from my part time work and will start again in a week's time.
:(

During the break, I practiced to draw by using pen and ink. Reason for choosing this medium is rather simple - I've never used brushes to draw and the idea to use brushes scare the daylight out of me! But half way through I looked at the "creative essentials blocks" (here) on my desk and decided that I should not let fear dominate my drawings.

I bought a couple of brushes and started practicing. As I mentioned before, I've never learn how to draw. Everything that I'm currently doing is by trail and error plus spending days reading art books, art magazines and poreing through art blogs and YouTube for understanding.
The process was full of difficulties and at times overwhelming. But somehow, I got through and finished the above drawing. I even followed a project's guideline to create an image by relying heavily on one color (red).

I wouldn't dare to say the drawing is good, but it's the best I could do with my current skill. Hence I'm pleased! :)

What do you think of it, my fellow bloggers and creatives? Any comments is appreciated.

For not having any training, you do nice work! I actually think this is quite good - really intriguing.

I love that you are following your passion.

These are so lovely, keep up the good work. I I think you're discovered a previously hidden talent my friend. It's a clever piece too, with extra fantasy. Do more... do more... The shading on the roses is really beautifully done.

Your drawings are great. I love the rose shapes and the little creature on the right, both have form and feeling. Sometimes we get caught up in the 'theory' of art, how do I apply this paint, what was it the art teacher said? And this is where I felt I was last year, kind of stuck with the rules, its nice to be able to let go and allow play to come into it, some of your best work will come from this.
Thank you for your gift, I keep it near on the kitchen bench so I can see it all the time, I am on the look out for one of those little easles you have to sit it on, any ideas where I can find one?

You really have a natural talent HybridJ, I agree with Angie, I have heard so many artists who have gone to art school say that they had to try and unlearn what they had learned to get back to their own natural talent. As I have said before you have found your niche with these little pieces. I just love this one it is your best yet, an off-the-wall title, I don't even know the word to say how original and funky and good it is.

What size is this picture and what did you do it on?

I love the delicate feel of this piece. I like the white space limited pallette and best of all it tells a strange little story bringing together roses and a starfish.

An starfish stealing roses! How original and fun! I love it! I think your drawing is excellent! Don't we often learn best by doing? That's my strategy and working theory so far. I look forward to what comes next! (P.S. I think you could make this idea into a whole series.)

Hi - first, thanks for visiting my blog. I appreciate it. The treatment on the tree was done with salt while the watercolor was still wet. I have a great teacher but the use of salt is pretty common I think.
Anyway, I LOVE this picture. I think all your work is amazing.
