What's in My Sketchbook?

Feeling run down the last few days ... major migraine caused by sinusitis  ... so this will be fairly short.

20110422 Lion Skull & Flower 2

After last week's Antler sketch, I worked on another sketch from an animal anatomy book.  This one is of a lion skull.  I did my best to follow through but the proportion was a bit off.  I didn't know why I added the red flower but after I finished it, I found the image quite amusing.  It's like the lion was having a good time smelling flowers. :)

While thinking of what to do about the photo, I came across this tutorial for making up a paper flower box.  I thought it would be fun to try out the paper flowers only.  What do you think?

The sketch is also for Paint Party Friday (hosted by Eva and Kristin).  All are welcomed!  Do join in to share and support each other.

Cheers and have a wonderful weekend!

Your sketch is wonderful! The flower adds a lot. Contrast in color, and subject. It balances the piece. Those paper flowers are cool too, thanks for sharing the link.

Hello Dear Jamie....
So sorry about the yucky sinusitis taking over your head right now.....interesting that you chose a skull to sketch based on the way yours must feel lately...hmmm ;P

I love the use of stippling for the shading...and the red fang and red flower add some interest, for sure :)

Those paper flowers are cute, too....they get addicting, don't they?!

Take care, Sweetie!
Hugs,
Cam

another great skull sketch and i really like the addition of the flower. its like the cylce of nature-the flower in full bloom and the lion being no more.

This is beautiful! I love the red flower too. It livens up the skull. :)

The red flower is such a great counterpoint to the skull, especially with the little bit of red on the tooth. And the paper flowers are wonderful...have to try that.

Wonderful drawing of the lion's skull! Is that a spot of blood from his last meal on his tooth? Nice touch!

I love the paper flowers. They look like a pond full of floating water lilies.

The flower (and blood on the tooth) really add a fabulous contrast. An amazing sketch and I love the flowers!

I enjoy following you and your journal - I like the framing you used with the blue behind the skull. The pop of red is perfect! You're so very talented!

Oooh yet another wonderful sketch to look at. I like the red flower a lot. It gives balance and a surprise to the piece. Very nice. Like all your paper flowers too. Makes me want to throw them up and the air and watch them fall to the ground like leaves blowing in the wind! Happy PPF! :-)

How fun; your sketch reminds me of The Lion King when he explains to the cub that they eat the antelope and then the lions bodies die and become grass for the antelope to eat. Love the recycled paper flowers; That would be a great project, with special words on the petals to evoke the feeling you want the peice to have. Happy PPF.

Nice job on the skull, maybe it's remembering the smell of flowers?
