A lesson to learn ...

Few weeks ago I wrote about me being a storage freak. Then BOOM! my portable hard disk died two days ago. Fortunately I got everything on an external hard disk, phew! At the moment I’m relying on my flash drive for secondary storage and will be getting another PHD after payday.

The moral of this story is: make sure you back up your files at least in 2 formats (i.e. your computer / laptop AND an external source).

I really should learn to do this. I nearly lost an essay today.

Eeep! My worst nightmare. Thanks to your original post I've started backing up really important current assignments on my USB stick. Apparently, if you use gmail, you can back things up through Google documents; so as long as you've got access to the net, you've got access to your documents. A friend of mine is a bit obsessed with it. I should ask him how to use it!

Hi Amanda,

Really, you should do it before it happens again! ;)

Hi Sophie,

Glad that you've started to back up files. There was a time when I used my personal email address as storage place for my writings. But it never felt right for me. It was as if I had left unfinished work out in the public. Though no one would be able to read it. But for some reasons, I just didn't feel comfortable to leave them in the virtual reality! Gee, I really sound like a paranoia!!! Must stop here .... ;)

You know, I think that's probably why I don't back things up on email -- I'm a bit paranoid as well! I also like to think I've got something physical in front of me to prove that I've backed up my work, if that makes sense.

I am going to see if I can get over the virtual-world fear though... I'll let you know how I go!

Hi Sophie,

You made perfect sense about needing physical evidence of your back up. Me too! And do let me know how you go with overcoming the virtual-world fear. I think I need to do the same ... :)

Thanks Laughing Wolf, I learn the lesson big time, if you know what I mean. ;)
