I could choose to work in the morning, late at night or not at all! Sounds great! Hmmm .... yes and no.</span><div>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><span style="color: blue;">Yes</span> - I have all the freedom and free time to do anything.</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><span style="color: red;">No </span>- I have to be freaking good at self-motivation or I won't get anything done.</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Right now, I have managed to maintain a daily schedule to work on my papercuts. But a lot of the time, I feel like I'm only going through the motion!</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">And I also thought my life would be filled with all sorts of interesting creative activities, like beach combing to get inspiration etc. Nope! I spent most of my time at home in front of the cutting table or the TV. (God bless * <a href="http://www.hbo.com/game-of-thrones#/">Game of Thrones</a> *!) Honestly, I go out because I need food or have to visit the doctors! And I live only a stone throw away to the beach!!!</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">This is getting on my nerve big time!</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Well I think I need to stop here otherwise this will turn into a self-obssessed rant. But then it might not be a bad idea! ;)</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Anyway, here is something that I've been working on in the last few weeks.</span></div>
<div>

<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">Hope you enjoy the cut!</span></div>

<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;">For months, I hesitate to enter blogland, because:</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><span style="background-color: white;"><u>Where</u></span> - (The gut feeling is to start afresh) ... so do I continue with blogger or migrate to other hosting source?</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><u>When</u> - Blog now while I'm still in the mist of <span style="color: blue;"><a href="http://hybridj.blogspot.com.au/2013/02/change.html">The Change</a></span> or wait til when I'm more of MYSELF?</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><u>Why</u> - Why do I want to blog?</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><u>How</u> - How to blog so it matches up to where I am now?</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;"><u>What</u> - What do I want to blog about?</span><br />

The MOs (short for <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microorganism">Microscopic Organisms</a>) continues their grab on my mind. I imagine them slowly coming together to become something. Perhaps a new kind of evolution ...</div>

<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
After 6 months' of intense cutting work every night and most weekends, my natural heavy handed cutting style finally caught up on me. My right wrist aches all the time. I'm now wearing a wrist guard whenever I work on my cuts. And I'll taking some days off from cutting to give my wrist some TLC.<br />
<br />
<br />

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Hence a word of warning to all Cutters: <span style="color: red;">Protect Your Working Hand before you are forced to stop!</span></span><br />

It's always a great joy when one creative idea leading to another! </div>
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
My last cut re-ignited my interest in <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microorganism">Microscopic Organisms</a> (i'll simply call it MOs).</div>
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/hybridj/8194232791/" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;" title="20121118 Microscopics by Hybrid J, on Flickr"><img alt="20121118 Microscopics" height="375" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8340/8194232791_ca097fc22b.jpg" width="500" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">The Microscopic Organisms (MOs) (28cm x 37cm / 11" x 14.5")</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
Though they are invisible to our eyes, the MOs are everywhere. With my very limited reading on the topic, I think of the MOs as the true aborigines which live in this world. Without them being the basic life form to support our ecosystem, none of the living things (be it plants, animals and humans) are able to exist.<br />
<br />

While I was flipping through one of my favourite natural history book, a name caught my eyes and my imagination.</div>
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
Have you heard of the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Venus%27_Flower_Basket">Venus's Flower Basket</a>? It is a <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hexactinellida">hexactinellid sponge</a>. The grow below 150m (500ft) below ocean and the Victorians used to collect them for display. From this I started to googled more images of the sponges and realized that I have to make some cuts for them.<br />
<br />
</div>
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
</div>
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/hybridj/8124140647/" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;" title="20121026 Glass Sponges by Hybrid J, on Flickr"><img alt="20121026 Glass Sponges" height="375" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8335/8124140647_66a3474bac.jpg" width="500" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Glass Sponges (28.5cm x 50.5cm / 11" x 19")</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
</div>
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
<br />
My cut is based on the general form of the glass sponges and Venus's Flower Basket. The cut is not an exact replica of the sponges but my version of it.</div>
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Venus's Flower Basket</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
And while working on the drawing of the sponges, I keep having these images of microscopic creatures swimming in the vast ocean. So what can you do when such fun creatures latch onto your creative mind. You bring them to the world!</div>
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">

Have you ever imagined what it would look like when: </div>
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
- A <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leafy_sea_dragon">Leafy Seadragon</a> hid in a hollowed sea plant</div>
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
- Got stuck at the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barnacles">Barnacles</a> colony with a few <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sea_urchin">Sea Urchin</a> as neighbour</div>
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
I think it would look like this .... :)</div>
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">

<br />
This cut took me close to 4-weeks to finish. Not sure if it was because of me being a very cautious cutter who cuts at snail pace!?!. Or because workplace had suck up most of my energy that there were nights which I could only concentrate to cut for an hour before sleep overcame me.<br />
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
How I dream of some days in the future when I could spend all my time on cuttings! (sigh) While I have the faintest idea of how to make such dream comes true, I'm to continue to work on my cuts. Maybe in time, it will become so good that some one will come along and say something like this:</div>
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
<i><br /></i></div>
<div style="color: blue; font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
<i>- We love your cuts and want you to join a group show!</i></div>
<div style="color: blue; font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
<i><br /></i></div>
<div style="color: blue; font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
<i>- Are your cuts for sale? We'd like to pay $$$ for it?</i></div>
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
Alright I'm definitely dreaming now. It's time to come back to reality and here I come ... my next cut!</div>
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">

<div style="color: magenta;">

Usually I would be working on the cuts on Sunday but not today!</div>
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
I worked too hard on a cut last night that my neck, shoulders and fingers are still in ache. I'm putting my feet up and have a cuppa at my wild backyard.</div>
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
Lo and behold, when did all these little daisies came out? I think Spring is on the way! </div>

Finished this cut at 2:00 am last night (or very early this morning) ...<br />
<br />
My fingers and arms were aching. My back was hurting like hell! But it's worth all the pains and the hours I put in.</div>
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
The board is created from my fascination of marine animals and plants. I reckon they have the most amazing looks and structure. </div>

<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
I also like this positive cut of the skull with hanging plants. Just on its own, it has the power to draw the viewer in and have the viewer imagining what the skull looks like. Or in my case, I have a different reaction to the cut. I feel like the animal is staring right at me ... as if it's asking me for something.</div>

I love the idea of presenting image of white on white background, but photographing them well is something that I need to learn more about.</div>
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
For the time being, I'll be including colored background for viewers to see the cuts better.</div>

I'm forever in awe of the natural world. It is full of wonders and beauty.</div>
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
Apart from stones and pebbles, I also love bones and flowers. Something about them (animal skull and flower) together make sense to me.</div>
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/hybridj/7660780230/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="20120728 Animal Skull & Orchid by Hybrid J, on Flickr"><img alt="20120728 Animal Skull & Orchid" height="375" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8159/7660780230_e30867bb8a.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
Of this cut, I pushed myself to work on finer line work as I'd like know just how fine a cut I could achieve.</div>
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/hybridj/7660778396/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="20120728 Animal Skull & Orchid (on hand) by Hybrid J, on Flickr"><img alt="20120728 Animal Skull & Orchid (on hand)" height="375" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8003/7660778396_0fc06b3617.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
<br />
I'm quite happy with the result. What do you think?</div>
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">

Finally got enough of cuts to to assemble a <span style="color: blue;">Cutting Board</span>!</div>
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/hybridj/7615117846/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="20120721 The Cutting Board by Hybrid J, on Flickr"><img alt="20120721 The Cutting Board" height="375" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8009/7615117846_461ecdc933.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
</div>
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
<i><span style="font-size: x-small;">(Sorry for the rather greyish pix. It has been raining for weeks here.)</span></i><br />
<br />
Most of the papercut artworks I came across are all in 1 piece. However, I quite like the idea of having several smaller cuts and put them together the way I like it.</div>
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/hybridj/7615108548/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="20120720 Pebbles CU by Hybrid J, on Flickr"><img alt="20120720 Pebbles CU" height="375" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7271/7615108548_af0a63a118.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
</div>
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
<br />
As the cuts are not mounted on the board permanently, I could always re-assemble or create a new board when I have more cut pieces.<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/hybridj/7615114864/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="20120720 Pebbles CU 2 by Hybrid J, on Flickr"><img alt="20120720 Pebbles CU 2" height="375" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8018/7615114864_021dcba17e.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
<br /></div>
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">It's like I'm building something or developing something ... (maybe, maybe not).</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">(You could view the details of the rest of the cut pieces either from my earlier posts: <a href="http://hybridj.blogspot.com.au/2012/07/if-im-being-honest.html">here</a>, <a href="http://hybridj.blogspot.com.au/2012/07/pebbles-cut.html">here</a> and <a href="http://hybridj.blogspot.com.au/2012/07/cutting-of-letters.html">here</a> or from my <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/hybridj/">Flickr photostream</a>.)</span><br />
<br />

The nagging feelings have been going on for many many months. But I chose to to ignore it. I didn't want to know that I might have been wrong all these time, that I still don't know what I'm supposed to do with my life ...</div>
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
The fact is that I'm still looking for that thing, that absolute thing which I was born to do, to be.</div>
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
Time is truly running out when you are at a certain number of your age. I just don't have that many sets of 10-years for trial and error. </div>

All these trying out of different creative medium have revealed its true purpose behind. It was the process of becoming.</div>
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
The mind have been so wrapped up by all the possibilities that it was drowned in it. I have lost my own language of becoming.</div>

<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
I'm starting anew to be honest to myself, to learn to speak my tongue all over again.</div>

"Baby steps ... baby steps ... baby steps ..."<br />
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/hybridj/7431184608/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="20120624 The Beginning by Hybrid J, on Flickr"><img alt="20120624 The Beginning" height="375" src="http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5346/7431184608_8d6e0cb123.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
Mixing light greys came more natural to me than mixing dark greys.</div>
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/hybridj/7431190180/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="20120624 Value 5 to 10 by Hybrid J, on Flickr"><img alt="20120624 Value 5 to 10" height="375" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7280/7431190180_2bc5965bb6.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/hybridj/7431181996/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="20120624 Value 0 to 5 by Hybrid J, on Flickr"><img alt="20120624 Value 0 to 5" height="375" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7273/7431181996_41a4135285.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
<br />
It took me about 2 hours to walk from 0-10.</div>
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/hybridj/7431187188/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="20120624 Mixing Greys by Hybrid J, on Flickr"><img alt="20120624 Mixing Greys" height="375" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8007/7431187188_2b65114351.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
During the process, I remembered that values are relative and not everyone see values exactly the same. My value 5 might look value 4 to you and that's o.k.</div>
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">This is how the long journey begins.</span></div>Hybrid Jhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09495322758574425713noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1551773263974891464.post-66970290239275396482012-06-17T16:58:00.001+10:002012-06-17T17:50:52.151+10:00Fifty Shades of Grey<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/hybridj/7384417916/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="20120616 Medium Grey Glass Palette .. by Hybrid J, on Flickr"><img alt="20120616 Medium Grey Glass Palette .." height="375" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7239/7384417916_6de86a2157.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
I thought I was over the Grey Matter last year when I learn and practiced color theories and color mixing for quite some time. Oh nooooooo ... it's coming back to haunt me again!</div>
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
<br />
As I went through the step by step videos from <a href="http://www.painting-tutorials-online.com/">PTO</a>, I was confronted with the Grey Matter again</div>
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
I don't know about you, but painting an accurate grey scale is not an easy matter to me. Especially, when I compared the <a href="http://www.dickblick.com/products/gray-scale-and-value-finder/">grey scale card</a> (from <a href="http://colorwheelco.com/">The Color Wheel Company</a>) I got at home to both the pdf and on-screen grey scale from PTO. The same Value 5 grey on all these scales are different. To top this, I had another set of grey scale from the online course I did last year which did not match any of the one I just mentioned.</div>
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
What am I to do with the fifty shades of grey? </div>
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
Maybe I should just pick one I like and forget about the rest <b>OR</b> read the <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Fifty-Shades-Grey-Book-Trilogy/dp/0345803485">book</a> which is currently a hot topics among women!<br />
<br />
Somehow I need to get over this to move forward with my learning.</div>
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
Sorry everyone, part of this crazy talk is my sore throat ranting its discomfort ...</div>
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Thanks for listening! ;)</span>Hybrid Jhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09495322758574425713noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1551773263974891464.post-88120217955459480272012-06-09T19:41:00.002+10:002012-06-10T23:57:06.877+10:00Creative Resources<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
I've been wanting to share some of my favourite creative resources for a long time. Since it will be awhile before I have anything decent to show, I'm making use of this interim to share some of my essentials resources with you!</div>
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
<u>1) <a href="http://escapefromillustrationisland.com/2010/01/07/free-andrew-loomis-art-intstruction-downloads/">Andrew Loomis Art Instruction Download (FREE)</a></u></div>
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andrew_Loomis">Andrew Loomis</a> was a well known American Illustrator and an art instructor. He had published quite a few art instruction books during his life time. Some of them had become out of print. But thanks to the good folks at <a href="http://escapefromillustrationisland.com/">Escape from Illustration Land</a>, we are now able to download all of the books for free.</div>
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
</div>
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
<u>2) <a href="http://store.doverpublications.com/">Dover Publications:</a> </u></div>
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
In my humble opinions, Dover got one of the best collection of reference books on art images. There are 2 of them which are my favourites. I use them all the time.</div>

<br />
<u>7) Art Supplies (online store)</u>:<br />
<br />
Though I love my country very much, in terms of source for art supplies, we have very limited supply here in Aussieland. Apart from the most basic art materials, I got the rest of my art supply from online stores such as <a href="http://www.dickblick.com/">Dick Blick USA</a>.</div>
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
<u>8) Books on "Talent" and "Drive":</u></div>
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
For decades, I had believed that writers, painters, musician etc possess natural born talent for their achievements. And that artistic flair come to these creative people easily. While mere mortal like me could only dream of being original or ever be great like them. </div>
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
The following 2 books help me to understand and to explain my own "unsettled" belief. If you too have the same doubt about talent vs. hard work, I encourage you to read them and make your own judgement. (BTW, if you have any eBook reading programme on your computer or own an eReader, you could buy them in eBook format. The e-version is cheaper than the hard copy. My links are of Kindle version.)</div>
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
</div>
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
<i>- <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Talent-Overrated-World-Class-Performers-ebook/dp/B004HYH7K6/ref=sr_1_1?s=digital-text&ie=UTF8&qid=1339233957&sr=1-1&keywords=talent+is+overrated">Talent is Overrated: What Really Separates World-Class Performers from Everybody Else</a> (by <a href="http://www.geoffcolvin.com/">Geoff Colvin</a>)</i></div>
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
<i><br /></i></div>
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
<i>- <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Drive-Surprising-Truth-Motivates-ebook/dp/B0033TI4BW/ref=sr_1_1?s=digital-text&ie=UTF8&qid=1339234014&sr=1-1&keywords=Daniel+H+Pink">Drive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us</a> (by <a href="http://www.danpink.com/">Daniel H Pink</a>)</i></div>
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
<u>7) Book on "Procrastination":</u></div>
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
Every now and then, I need a straight to the face, no bullshit, even close to brutal reminder of what procrastination is all about. Below is the book I'm currently reading to get over my procrastination. </div>
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
<i><a href="http://www.amazon.com/The-War-of-Art-ebook/dp/B007A4SDCG/ref=sr_1_1?s=digital-text&ie=UTF8&qid=1339234242&sr=1-1&keywords=The+War+of+Art">The War of Art</a> (by <a href="http://www.stevenpressfield.com/">Steven Pressfield</a>)</i></div>
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
That's about it for now. I hope you'll enjoy them as much as I do. And pls do share of your view on them with us.</div>
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Cheers and have a fantastic weekend! xxoo</span>Hybrid Jhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09495322758574425713noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1551773263974891464.post-36881000134360097732012-06-02T17:50:00.002+10:002012-06-02T18:41:05.861+10:00What's In My Sketchbook?<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
<i>My sketchbook pages are filled with drawing exercises like last week. So I'm not going to bore you with them. Instead if you would allow me a bit of a whinge ... </i></div>
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="color: blue; font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
<b><u>This week is very unsatisfying ...</u></b></div>
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
- Extremely busy at work as the office was understaffed due to people falling sick one after another and at the same time, company asked some of our staff to take long overdue leaves. I ended up working 3 people's job for the whole week.<br />
<br />
(Usually, I work only 4-days a week and then focus on my creative projects the rest of the time.)</div>
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
- Classic <a href="http://www.visitmelbourne.com/">Melbourne</a> winter weather - COLD and Wet.</div>
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
- I'm feeling a bit out of sort ...I think I'm about to get sick.</div>
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
- Then came the usual blockage which I need to go through before I could start any creative work. Do you know what that is? It starts with the letter P. It's called <b><span style="color: red;">PROCRISTINATION</span></b>. How do I know that? Here are the usual symptoms.</div>
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
1) Spending hours and hours watching <a href="http://www.drawing-tutorials-online.com/Index.cfm">DTO</a> & <a href="http://www.painting-tutorials-online.com/">PTO</a> videos over and over again.</div>
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/hybridj/7318871910/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="20120526 Watching DTO = Procrasination by Hybrid J, on Flickr"><img alt="20120526 Watching DTO = Procrasination" height="500" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8158/7318871910_f59fd6836d.jpg" width="375" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
2) Prepping canvas panels in rainy days ... takes forever to dry!</div>
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/hybridj/7318867788/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="20120527 Prepping Canvas by Hybrid J, on Flickr"><img alt="20120527 Prepping Canvas" height="375" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7224/7318867788_7fd6680caf.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
</div>
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
<br />
3) Traveling all the way into the city to shop for art materials while I could get them close by or get them online.<br />
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/hybridj/7318865776/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="20120602 Glass Palette and WS Oil Paint & Medium by Hybrid J, on Flickr"><img alt="20120602 Glass Palette and WS Oil Paint & Medium" height="375" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7228/7318865776_d1d003b10d.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
4) Keep thinking I need to make another trip into the city for a more fancy (i.e. baroque style picture frame) and bigger glass palette.</div>
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/hybridj/7318863624/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" title="20120602 My Glass Palette, Palette Knives and Gray Scale by Hybrid J, on Flickr"><img alt="20120602 My Glass Palette, Palette Knives and Gray Scale" height="375" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7088/7318863624_f94fb6bd0f.jpg" width="500" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
<br />
Though the above are all essentials for preparation of any painting / drawing lessons, I know deep down I'm procrastinating.<br />
<br />
Why? Because I want to skip all those slow learning process and be able to paint well immediately. But the hard truth is I can't and I don't think anyone can master a skill over night. So let's get back to reality, bite the bullet and dive into the practice.</div>
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
Thank you for listening to all this nonsense and you all have been so supportive to my venture. Thank You!<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">
</div>
<div style="color: lime;">
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS",sans-serif;">Cheers and have a wonderful weekend! xxoo</span></div>
